Fashion: Rivals of Time

Rivals of Time is not your average apparel company. Their goal is to create a new brand experience by evolving a new avenue of collaborative projects, at the same time being able to expose the talent of the "Modern Day Art Renaissance", they call it. Along with the design on the garment, there is content, a song, and a video, creating personality beyond just a piece of clothing and reflecting the same theme of "time" along with the collaborative parties. This provides a new shopping experience for consumers, being able to connect to the brand and learn about talent that was right under their nose.

And it is all bonded with one common idea: Time

Get ready for March 10, when they are launching their full website, all garments and the rival against time.

And join them, along with MTV Sucker Free, at their First Official Launch Party, March 10, where I will be PERFORMING LIVE with acts including Short Dawg, Kooley High, Rugz D Bewler, Danse Daimons, Electric Slim, Prince Fev, Siya, Rivals of Time at Canal Room 8PM-4 AM.

FILM: THE MILLENNIUM TRILOGY

Swedish actress Noomi Rapace’s portrayal of Lisbeth Salander, in the films based on Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy, is a tour de force. Lisbeth is a punk-rock, genius computer hacker, who aids an aggressive journalist trying to solve a murder mystery.

It’s just great storytelling (in all three films) and her character is so compelling you won’t forget her. These films were originally released in 2009 in Sweden and the last installment arrived in U.S. theaters this past October. All three are now available on DVD (I borrowed them from the public library) and (if you have the time) you might find yourself watching one right after the other.

In order they are:
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

The Girl Who Played With Fire

The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest

I’m sure there’s talk of a Hollywood remake, but I highly recommend seeing the trilogy before that happens.

Film: Moving Forward and Backwards Simultaneously?

After doing several hours of research on technical specs, watching sample footage and shooting a music video with one, I’m still on the fence about buying a DSLR camera. You’ve seen them (I’ve talked about them in previous blogs) and maybe you’ve even shot with one--they are the cameras that look like still cameras but shoot in full 1080p HD glory. However, you cannot capture professional, broadcast quality audio with one simultaneously (unless you really want to risk all of your precious audio recording through a ¼” adapter) and so, you need a separate XLR recording device on set. Later, you must sync the audio to the picture--after you log and capture both in your computer for post. This is just like the OLD double system of using a film camera and a separate Nagra for sound and syncing them with a clapboard on a Steenbeck. The picture looks great, but having to take that extra step of synching the audio can be time consuming in post.

OLD Steenbeck Editing Machine

If you have the time… great--take full advantage. I really believe the portability of indie-digi ‘guerrilla’ movie making is at its best right now--with that small exception.

Design: Qatar's Sustainable World Cup Stadiums

Qatar is already gearing up to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Designed by AS&P, these stadiums will be fully modular and self sustainable. “The brand new stadiums, Al-Khor, Al-Wakrah, and Al-Shamal, will each be assembled using modular components for easy disassembly and transport at the close of the game. Each stadium will exceed capacity for FIFA requirements and each of the seats as well as the pitch (aka field) will be cooled using an innovative, environmentally friendly, carbon-neutral technology.

Solar Thermal Collectors and PV panels will also be used to harness the sun’s energy, in turn powering absorption chilling systems. Air handling systems will re-circulate the air throughout the stadium, ensuring everyone is comfortable in the formidable desert heat. An integrated Building Management System will monitor the various different elements of each stadium, and each of the seats as well as the field will be shaded and protected from direct sun light.”

For more you can look at AS&P’s press release or a much more comprehensible article at Inhabitat.

Fashion: "Nomo" Griffey's

Definitely been anticipating this release! With a Slew Of Air Griffey Max 1's last year, it's good to get a breath of fresh air, the Nike Air Max Nomo! Another well celebrated baseball/training sneaker. The Nike Air Max Nomo was the signature shoe of Japanese major league pitcher Hideo Nomo. Originally released in 1996, the Air Nomo was more then well received, thanks to the shared sole of the Griffey Max 1 and air bubble usage! The first colorway release is the red-black-white-varsity maize (my personal favorite). They're already starting to show up at select stores such as City Footwear. Retail is about $140.00. But get there fast are there won't be "NOMO"

Film: The Force Ad

The nostalgia of a classic film, brought to new light by a young girl’s imagination - and then having the imagination empowered by her father (at the touch of a button - no less). The car even makes the dad look cool to his wife, as he gives a casual raise of the brow acknowledging how effortlessly he (through the car) excites their child’s fantasy! And in a way he’s telling his wife it’s harmless to encourage their child’s imagination, although it is based on fiction (as the mom had an indifferent look earlier to her daughter’s affinity towards Vader), which makes him an even cooler dad. Not to mention, the change in stereotype, a little girl passing on the expected princess scenario to play the villainous Vader. How the story is told through the “acting” of the child’s hands, creates a journey of struggle and disappointment, that is ultimately won by her dad’s anonymous assistance (through the car of course). The effort characterized in the muster of hopeful little hands, helps to build the suspense and leads to the reward of this Ad’s priceless moment - the child’s startled reaction of sheer amazement! Very smart, how they sell a car feature through an emotional connection.

Film 101:THE ODESSA STEPS

Along with Lev Kuleshov, Russian filmmaker Sergei Eisentein’s experiments with montage also revolutionized cinema. In his 1925 war propaganda film, Battleship Potemkin, Eisenstein assembled this famous sequence that would go on to be included in every FILM 101 syllabus. Observe the baby carriage towards the end of Eisenstein’s sequence and then watch the train station sequence (with the baby carriage) in Brian DiPalma’s 1987 film, The Untouchables.

Music: Jenny's "Back"

The Latin Queen is back! Jennifer Lopez is back in the Lab with her new single "On the Floor" featuring Pitt Bull. This song is going to be huge. It's definitely going to be an international sensation. If you love to dance, get those dancing shoes ready, because that's what you'll be doing when you hear this. The American Idol host is looking to do big things for 2011- movies, music, the whole shebang. Jenny from the block didn't forget her urban roots, as she seems to think Little Wayne could possibly be the best Hip-Hop artist to date. She also talked about doing a remix with the Boss himself, Ricky Rose'. If you're a Jennifer Lopez fan, you can follow what she's doing on her website http://www.jenniferlopez.com/ and listen to her interview with Angie Martinez on http://www.hot97.com/angiemartinez/
